H. Cecil Booth patents a vacuum cleaner powered by an engine and mounted on a horse-drawn cart. Teams of operators would reel the hoses into buildings to be cleaned. It was later transported by automobile.

James Spangler invents the "electric suction-sweeper". It employs an electric fan to generate suction, rotating brushes to loosen dirt, a pillowcase for a filter, and a broomstick for a handle. Spangler is unsuccessful, as it is heavy and large, so he sells the rights to his relative, William Hoover, who later redesigns the product.

It calculates the size of a room by following around the walls for 90 seconds to 15 minutes and then begins cleaning. Once it is finished, it automatically shuts off.
